Essential Tips for Successful Plant Care: Watering, Mulching, and Protection Practices for Newly Planted Trees and Shrubs
After the planting process, it is crucial to provide adequate watering for newly planted trees and shrubs. Start with a thorough watering and then monitor the soil moisture level. Water when the soil feels dry to the touch, typically about 1.5 inches or knuckle deep. Regularly check the soil moisture and water only when necessary, as overwatering or underwatering are common reasons for plant failure. During extended periods of hot and dry weather, watering may be required every two days. It is advisable to water before noon to allow plants to absorb moisture before the heat of the day. In the fall, continue watering new plants once a week until the ground freezes. However, if there has been at least 1 inch of rainfall within a week, watering may not be necessary.
For plants in clay soil, ensure that they do not remain sitting in water, as this can lead to root rot. To promote deep root growth, allow a slow trickle of water to soak into the soil at the base of the plant for approximately 10-15 minutes.
To maintain the area around trees, cultivate the soil and remove any grass. Alternatively, apply a layer of organic mulch, such as pine, fir, or cypress bark, or soil conditioner, with a thickness of 1 to 2 inches.
During planting, we recommend using Bio-tone Plant Starter Plus, which should provide sufficient nutrients for the first year.
For young trees, protect their trunks during the first winter season by wrapping them to prevent sun-scald. Remove the wrap during warm weather. Evergreen trees should be shielded from wind and salt spray.
By following these watering, mulching, fertilizing, and protection practices, you can help ensure the successful establishment and growth of your newly planted trees and shrubs.
